The Historical Reality

Pirate crews were highly international melting pots. Voices on deck ranged from West African languages and Irish brogues to French, Dutch, indigenous Caribbean dialects, and colonial American regional speech. The theatrical pirate voice was popularized by actor Robert Newton's portrayal of Long John Silver in the 1950 Disney film Treasure Island.
